The Team
Clinical Director

Chris Boynes is a very proactive and experienced chartered sports and musculoskeletal physiotherapist with a previous degree in Physical Education. He started PhysioActive in 1996 and is proud of the excellent reputation the practice has gained both with patients and other medical professionals. Chris sets the bar high and ensures that the rest of the team keep to his high standards.

For six years he was Club Physiotherapist to London Irish RFC and continues to work with athletes from a great diversity of sports, including some aiming for the 2012 Olympics. In 2009 he toured with the England U19 football team in Slovenia. Chris lectures on sports injury management to chartered physiotherapists and other medical professionals in the UK and abroad. Most recently he presented on ‘Back Pain in Sports’ at the 2009 Back Show in London. Chris works closely with the Spinal Foundation in Congleton, treating patients suffering with back problems.

When not supporting his 14 year old son playing rugby, Chris runs and cycles. In August 2009 he was part of the British NIKE team which ran the 197 mile Hood to Coast relay in Oregon, USA.

Musculoskeletal & Sports Injury Specialists

Jim Hopkins
has a sports science background and previous degree in Human Movement Studies, which he combines with several years’ experience working as a musculoskeletal chartered physiotherapist. For two seasons Jim was physiotherapist to the London Knights Ice Hockey players and has also worked with several amateur rugby clubs. Jim has established a good local reputation for his work with young athletes in all sporting disciplines, particularly soccer, rugby and gymnastics. He has also worked with a local supermarket chain, providing advice and treatment in the workplace. 

Away from the clinic, Jim has his hands full with three young children. However, he does find the time for the odd game of veterans rugby. In April 2009 he completed his first marathon in Paris and is keen to try another in the near future.



 
Christian van der Merwe has worked in many different clinical areas since qualifying as a Physio in 2000 but his main interest lies in Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine. He gained his Diploma in Orthopaedic Medicine in 2008 and is planning to complete his Masters in Advanced Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy within the next few years. While working in the NHS he was involved in a project to develop an Assessment Service at Guy’s Hospital to reduce waiting times and improve quality of care to patients. He has worked as a rugby physio for a number of years – with Newton Abbott RFC, Blackheath RFC Development Squad and Old Colfeians – and currently treats athletes in all sports at our Mottingham and West Wickham clinics. 

A keen rugby player, Christian played in the Wasps Development Squad before going on to   study physiotherapy at university. He also enjoys golf and mountain biking.

 


Rebecca Hollier draws on her experience and knowledge as a competitive gymnast when working as a chartered sports physiotherapist; fully understanding the needs of the athlete both psychologically and physically. As Physio for the British Ice Skating team in 2006/7, she was involved in events both at home and abroad, including the British Championships and The Olympic Training Camp in Austria. She continues to work regularly with a wide variety of athletes, from dancers and gymnasts to rugby players. Becky graduated from the University of Brighton in 2001 and worked on NHS rotations at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and UCL before gaining her postgraduate Diploma in Sports & Exercise Medicine at Barts & The London in 2007.

After spending a year in Australia, Becky returned to the UK in 2009 with husband Tom and their young daughter.

 

 
Alastair Thrush gained a degree in Sports Science from the University of Birmingham before studying for a Masters in Physiotherapy in Glasgow.  After working for a number of years within the NHS in Scotland, Alastair spent two years in New Zealand and Australia building up a wealth of experience in manual therapy and sports injury rehabilitation. Alastair is a member of the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Sports Medicine and has previously worked with the Scottish FA and Scottish Rugby Union youth squads.  In New Zealand he was physiotherapist to Canterbury United FC, Merrivale-Linclon RFC and the New Zealand Touch Rugby squad.  He now provides physiotherapy cover for Old Colfeians RFC.



Alastair is a keen sportsman and has a love for outdoor sports such as snowboarding, mountain biking and climbing. He also enjoys running and successfully completed the 2007 Great North Run and the 2008 London Marathon.

 

 

Sophie Busfield gained her degree from St Georges Medical School, London in 2006. She initially worked part time for the academy teams at Millwall Football Club and on graduating took on a full time position as the Academy Physiotherapist. She also took on first team duties and stepped in as the first team physiotherapist when required. In 2007 Sophie worked with the English women’s cricket teams. Sophie also runs clinics at Emmanuel School, looking after their sports scholars. She has recently started her Masters in sports medicine at Barts in London.

Sophie is a keen swimmer and runner and her clinical interests include exercise rehabilitation, tissue release and end stage rehabilitation for return to sport.


 
Paul Day qualified as a chartered physiotherapist in 2004. He has worked in the NHS gaining experience to senior level in trauma and orthopaedics, most recently at the limb reconstruction centre in Kings College Hospital. In addition to working as a manual and exercise therapist for all sports and musculoskeletal injuries, Paul is particularly interested in becoming a spinal specialist and hopes to start his MSc studies in due course.

A former Royal Marines Commando, Paul is also a qualified personal trainer and sports massage therapist. He plays rugby at Beccehamians RFC and has provided physio for the ladies team. He is a keen runner, attends the gym, cycles and enjoys hill walking.


 
Neurological Specialist

Carly Geraghty
graduated from the University of East London with a First Class degree in Physiotherapy in 2001. She began specialising in Neurology in 2002. Carly has worked with patients who have suffered from different neurological conditions, including Stroke, Multiple Sclerosis, Spinal cord injury, head injury and Parkinson’s disease. She has also worked with patients with balance disturbances and those at risk of falls. To supplement Carly’s clinical experience, she has attended Bobath Training Courses, specialising in the treatment of patients with Neurological deficits. She has also attended training courses and study days on Gait Re-education, Motor Control, Spasticity and Botox, to name a few!



Carly is a member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy and the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Neurology.

 

Sports Physician

Dr Mukul Agarwal
is a much travelled sports physician. His clinical training in General Practice, Tropical Medicine, Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine has been interspersed with numerous spells as Expedition Doctor to places such as the Himalayas, Africa and the Americas. Most recently he travelled across Nicaragua with the 11 disabled participants involved in the BBC 2 series Beyond Boundaries and he has been actively involved in teaching about medicine relevant to remote travel to mountaineers, scientists, lay people and health workers.  Mukul was team doctor and sports physician for the successful Great Britain paralympic team which won 35 gold medals in Athens 2004. He also worked for the organising committees at the Athens Olympics, Manchester Commonwealth Games and U19 Rugby World Championships in South Africa.

Mukul is British-Indian of origin and interested in multicultural aspects of health and alternative therapies, travel and culture. 


 

Sports Massage Therapist & Pilates Instructor

Rebecca Medcalf
graduated from Leeds University in 2007 and soon after completed her Diploma in Sports Massage Therapy and Personal Training. She has a great passion for health and fitness and thoroughly enjoys all sports. She has represented the South West in netball and played hockey for the Air Training Corps. She represented Leeds University in rowing and trampolining and has also trained in Muay Thai. Nowadays she concentrates more on swimming, running and Pilates.

Becky has also trained as a STOTT Pilates instructor and runs Pilates classes alongside her sports massage therapy. She concentrates particularly on improving posture as it not only helps to prevent sports injury but also improves general wellbeing and mental attitude. By combining her knowledge of personal training and Pilates she aims to create the best care and progressive treatments as a sports massage therapist.
 
Podiatrist

Simon Coe
qualified as a State Registered Chiropodist / Podiatrist in 1992. Initially developing his career within the NHS he then moved into the commercial sector in 1999, working for Boots where he became a lead clinical advisor. He established himself as a private practitioner in 2004 in the Dartford area joining the PhysioActive team in 2006. He has a specific interest in podiatric biomechanics especially in relation to sport and dance. He has a competitive swimming background having competed at national level and is a Qualified ASA Level 3 Swimming Coach. He is currently the Head Coach of Orpington Ojays Swimming Club.

Strength and Conditioning

Tom Eisenhuth
graduated from the Australian College of Physical Education with a degree in Personal Development Health and Physical Education. He entered the field of strength and conditioning coaching with the St George Illawrara Dragons in 2001 before moving to the UK where he worked with the 2nd Ranked British Ice skating pair.  More recently he has worked with triathletes, rugby league and individual athletes both in Australia and the UK.

In sport, Tom competed at a semi professional level and represented New South Wales in both Rugby League and Union. In 2004 Tom completed the French Ironman and is currently in training for the 2010 Etape and French Ironman. 

He comes to PhysioActive highly recommended for his ability to ensure your personal or team goals are achieved. With the ability to provide year-round conditioning programs Tom offers more than a personal training session.  He will tailor a programme based on your personal goals to ensure you peak at the right time and avoid injury.
