Hip
A typical hip injury in sport would be due to overused or even torn muscles around the front of the hip caused by high powered or repetitive movements such as sprinting or jumping. Other problems include hip impingements, which may arise over a period of time from changes in your movement patterns. The main symptoms are pain and loss of normal movement. Many hip problems are due to the muscles that provide hip extension and stability being too weak and not being used properly.
Physiotherapy can address these muscle imbalances, treat the pain, and advise on strengthening exercises, which will help you regain normal movement.
Hip problems are also due to degenerative changes over a period of time (eg osteoarthritis), which can lead to pain and restriction in movement. This is due to wear and tear of the cartilage, which covers the surface of the joint.
Physiotherapy can provide pain relief with acupuncture, joint mobilisation and soft-tissue release. A specific exercise programme will help strengthen the trunk and hip area to enable you to achieve a better range of movement.
