Headaches

Many headaches are caused by stiffness and tension in the top three cervical joints of the neck. Symptoms include a feeling of tiredness, aching in the neck and shoulders,  pain at the back or top of the head and behind the eye. These headaches may occur as a result of trauma, such as a car accident, or be stress or posture related. Sometimes they can last for days or even weeks. However they can usually be successfully treated with physiotherapy treatment such as joint mobilisations, soft tissue massage, posture advice and self-help exercises. Acupuncture can also help.

If you suffer with headaches, speak to your GP, who may recommend physiotherapy treatment. Or you can go directly to a physiotherapist for assessment and treatment.

Neck Pain

Many people suffer from neck pain, which is also linked to pain and stiffness in the upper back and shoulders. Referred pain from the neck can be felt from the shoulder blade down to the fingers. Symptoms might include an altered sensitivity, dull ache or sharp pain, and pins and needles. Often these symptoms are posture related, brought about by sitting in a slouched position in front of the TV or computer. Whiplash injuries, caused by road traffic accidents or contact sports, can also cause neck pain brought about by the sudden strain put on joints, ligaments and muscles.

If you suffer from any of these symptoms we would advise you to book a spinal assessment with a physiotherapist. After a thorough assessment of your neck and spine, the physiotherapist will discuss the most appropriate form of treatment with you to help relieve your pain and help you return to your normal lifestyle. This may include soft-tissue release, mobilisations, manipulations, self-help exercises and acupuncture.
