Ankle
The most common ankle injury is the lateral ligament injury (or ankle sprain) where the ankle is twisted inwards, either on an uneven surface or by falling off a kerb. People often refer to it as ‘rolling my ankle over’. Part of the ligament can be torn or ruptured which causes the area around the ankle to become swollen and painful.
Physiotherapy will assist in the healing of the damaged tissue, reducing swelling and pain, increasing the range of movement, muscle power and balance.
Achilles tendon:
Generally, both conditions are caused by overuse. For example, wearing incorrect running shoes, or a sudden increase in running mileage which may alter the biomechanics of the trunk and lower limbs and lead to various muscle movement imbalances. Tight calf muscles can also cause problems with the Achilles.
